The Town of Barnstable was first discovered in 1602 by Captain Bartholomew Gosnold. It was incorporated in 1639 by English explorers. It has seven villages within its boundaries and 100 miles of splendid beaches. Each village has unique and significant cultural and historical qualities. Located on the south side are Hyannis, Centerville, Osterville and Cotuit. Marstons Mills surrounds Route 28 and on the north side is West Barnstable and Barnstable village.

Barnstable has two working harbors located in Hyannis, which consists of a fishing fleet and the Steamship Authority that provides access to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, and Barnstable village which also has a fishing fleet and many private boats.
